In today’s fast-paced world, pyrolytic ovens are becoming increasingly popular for their innovative self-cleaning technology. These appliances efficiently remove residue buildup inside the oven, offering a convenient and hassle-free way to keep your cooking space spotless.
A pyrolytic oven is a type of self-cleaning oven that uses extremely high temperatures to burn off food residue grease and spills inside the oven cavity. This turns the food residue into ash, which can simply be wiped away.
Smeg pyrolytic ovens are specially designed to withstand these high temperatures (500°C) and are fitted with automatically locking doors that prevent any risk of accidental opening while on a cleaning cycle.
Pyrolytic ovens offer several benefits over regular ovens, which include:
If you cook frequently, have a busy lifestyle, and hate cleaning your oven manually, then a pyrolytic oven is definitely the right choice for you.
Pyrolytic ovens reach high temperatures that burn off food residue and grease, meaning you don’t need to manually scrub your oven or use harsh cleaning chemicals to clean your oven.
Therefore, a pyrolytic oven will save you time, hassle, is generally more hygienic, and removes the need to buy or dispose of harsh chemicals, which is better for the environment.
What is the best pyrolytic oven depends on your needs in the kitchen. For example, you may need to factor in the size of your kitchen, and how much you cook at one time. If you host dinner parties regularly and you have the kitchen space, then you may choose a larger oven, like our pyrolytic double oven.
Conversely, if you don’t have a lot of kitchen space available and you’re looking for a more compact option, then an option like our reduced-height 90cm pyrolytic oven may be the best choice for you.
If you’re looking for a pyrolytic oven with smart capabilities, then we also have available a model with Wi-Fi and smart cooking capabilities.

Before you start the pyrolytic cleaning process:
Starting the programme:
Choose the duration based on how dirty your oven is:
The door will lock automatically once the process starts, and until after it has completed and returned to a safe temperature. Once the oven has cooled enough, wipe away the ash with a damp cloth.

Generally, a pyrolytic oven cleaning cycle takes 1 - 3 hours, depending on the cleaning cycle you put it on and how dirty your oven is. You must also allow time for the oven to heat up and cool down, before you can use it again, meaning the whole cycle can take a little longer.
A thorough self-clean of your oven every 4 - 6 months should be sufficient to keep your oven clean. We advise you to avoid using the self-cleaning feature too regularly, due to the amount of electricity used and the wear and tear to the components of your oven.
Pyrolytic and Catalytic ovens are both self-cleaning ovens, but differ in how they clean:
The downside of catalytic ovens is that they don’t clean as thoroughly as pyrolytic ovens, as the liner only covers part of the oven, and these liners need to be replaced every 3 - 6 months.
While you can disconnect, move, or install a pyrolytic oven yourself, it can be sensible to leave it to the professionals, to make sure your pyrolytic oven is installed properly.
Disconnecting, moving, and installing a pyrolytic oven can also require special wiring being installed in your kitchen, due to the large electrical power needs of a pyrolytic oven.
Here at Smeg we can arrange the safe disconnect and removal of your old oven and connect your new pyrolytic oven for you - just select these services when placing your order.
