Frequently asked questions

Which freezer is best for me?

The best freezer for you depends on your household’s needs. If you have limited kitchen space, a compact under-counter freezer may be ideal. But if you have larger storage needs, then a tall upright freezer would be a better option for you. The key factors to consider when choosing a freezer include:

Size and Capacity
Kitchen space: Ensure you measure the space available before purchasing a freezer.
Storage needs: Large households or those who bulk-buy frozen food may need a freezer with greater capacity.

Type of Freezer
Freestanding Freezer: Offering flexible placement and easy installation, freestanding freezers are ideal for kitchens where built-in appliances may not be an option
Integrated Freezer: Designed to be seamlessly built into your kitchen cabinetry.

Freezer Features:
Energy Efficiency: Smeg freezers typically achieve a D-rating on the new energy efficiency scale (equivalent to the former A+++ rating), helping you reduce your energy consumption.
No Frost Technology: Prevents ice buildup, eliminating the need for manual defrosting.
Fast Freeze Function: Rapidly lowers the temperature to preserve food freshness.
Adjustable Shelving & Compartments: Maximizes storage flexibility.
Reversible Doors: Allows flexible installation to suit your kitchen layout.

What is an integrated freezer?

Also known as a “built-in” freezer, integrated freezers are
installed within the kitchen units. Then your existing kitchen doors are fitted
to the front of the appliance(s) which hides them from view, thus providing a
seamless look and feel.

How much electricity does a freezer use?

The amount of electricity a freezer uses depends on its size, efficiency rating, and usage habits. Freezers typically consume between 150 kWh and 400 kWh per year. However, this can vary largely due to a number of factors. Factors affecting energy consumption include:
• The model of freezer you have, with large freestanding freezers using more electricity and energy, than a small freezer.
• A freezer's energy efficiency rating is one of the biggest factors in electricity use. More energy efficient models use less electricity and cost less to run.
• The ambient temperature near where your freezer is located will affect electricity use, as a freezer placed in a hot environment will work harder to maintain temperature.
• Frequently opening the freezer causes it to use more energy to maintain temperature.
• Overloading the freezer can increase the temperature of your freezer, forcing it to work harder and leading to frost buildup. This can affect your freezer’s performance, making it use more electricity.

What temperature should my freezer operate at?

Your freezer temperature should operate at -18°C (0°F), or slightly lower, to help keep your food frozen and maintain its quality for longer. If your freezer is higher than -18°C, then you should adjust your thermostat accordingly.
If you have an old freezer which you think feels warmer than it should be, start by ensuring the door seals are clean, in good condition, and sealing correctly. You may want to consider having your freezer serviced, or you may decide it’s time for a replacement to ensure optimal performance and keep your food frozen safely. Please see the FAQ below for information about how to dispose of your old freezer responsibly.

How long should you leave a freezer to settle before turning it on?

You should leave your freezer to settle in-situ for at least 4 hours before you plug it in and turn it on. This gives the internal gases the opportunity to settle following transport. Once you’ve turned it on, set the thermostat to the desired temperature ( around -18°C (0°F) and leave it to reach the desired temperature before you place any food inside.

What is a frost-free freezer?

A frost-free freezer prevents the buildup of ice by using an automatic defrosting system, so you don’t have to manually defrost it. This keeps the freezer running efficiently and ensures even cooling.

How long does it take for a new freezer to get cold?

A freezer can take between 6 and 24 hours to get cold. If you’ve bought a new freezer, we advise leaving it 24 hours from when you first turn it on to reach the correct temperature before you start loading it with any food.

How do I find out the capacity of my freezer?

You can find out the capacity of your freezer (typically measured in litres) by measuring the interior height, width, and depth in centimetres, and then multiplying them together. This will provide you with the capacity in terms of cubic centimetres. Then simply divide by 1,000 to determine the volume in litres.

How do I install a new freezer?

Installing a freestanding freezer is simple. Once you have moved it to the desired location and unpacked it (ensuring you remove any protective packaging which may surround the compressor), leave it to settle for at least 4 hours, before turning on.
For integrated freezers, installation can be more complex as they must be fitted within kitchen cabinetry. While you can install it yourself, we recommend using a professional installation service to ensure proper fitting and optimal performance.
Here at Smeg, we can take care of installation for you, as well as removal and disposal of your old freezer. Simply select the services you desire when purchasing your new freezer, and we take care of the rest!

How to dispose of an old freezer

Disposing of your old freezer is simple, and there are plenty of ways to get rid of your old appliances for free:

Donate: If your freezer is still in working condition, consider donating it to a local charity.
Waste collection authority: Your local council may collect old freezers and dispose of your bulky electronic items for you.
Recycle: Many recycling centres accept old freezers and large electronics for safe disposal

Do you have to pay to recycle a freezer?

In most cases you do not need to pay to dispose of a freezer at your local tip or recycling centre if you transport it there yourself. However, you will have to pay a fee if you arrange for collection & disposal by your local council.
