Frequently asked questions

What is the most efficient type of kettle?

The most efficient type of kettle is typically an electric kettle with rapid boil technology, which heats water quickly, reducing energy consumption. Smeg kettles are designed with this in mind, making them both efficient and stylish.

In addition, we use stainless steel for our kettles as stainless steel has better heat retention, better odour and stain resistance, increased durability & longevity, and is easily recyclable - all of which offers significant advantages over cheaper, less environmentally friendly plastic kettles.

How many litres does a kettle hold?

This really depends on whether you are looking for a kettle for day to day usage, or a small travel kettle. Smeg kettles generally hold around 1.7 litres of water, which is enough to make several cups of tea or coffee at once. However, we also have a smaller 0.8l mini kettle which is perfect for when you regularly just boil a smaller volume of water.

What is a cordless kettle?

A cordless kettle is an electric kettle that sits on a separate base. The kettle itself can be lifted off the base without any cords attached, making it easier to pour and manoeuvre in your kitchen.

What is a whistling kettle?

A whistling kettle is a type of stovetop kettle designed to produce a loud whistling sound when the water inside reaches boiling point. The whistle is created by steam passing through a small opening in the spout cover, alerting you that your water is ready.

These kettles are popular for their classic, retro charm and do not require electricity, making them ideal for use on gas, electric, ceramic or induction hobs. Smeg’s whistling kettles combine this timeless functionality with their signature stylish design, available in a range of colours to complement any kitchen.

Can you use a whistling kettle on an electric hob?

It depends on the kettle but we’re pleased to say that our new Smeg whistling kettles can be used on gas, electric, ceramic, and induction hobs making them perfect for any kitchen!

How much energy does a kettle use?

It depends on a number of factors such as how quickly water can be boiled, and the wattage. Contrary to what you may think, higher wattage appliances are often more energy efficient as they’re able to heat water faster, thus requiring less energy over the total heating duration.

Smeg’s 1.7L kettles have a power rating of 3000W. On average, boiling a full kettle (1.7 litres) uses about 0.1 kWh of energy, which equates to around 1.2 pence per use, depending on your local energy rates.

How long do Smeg kettles take to boil?

Again this depends on a number of factors. For example, a variable temperature kettle may never actually “boil” as if you’re heating water for a green tea or delicate white tea, you may only want to set it to 50°C. The volume of water boil also makes a significant difference, as boiling water for just 1-2 cups can typically be achieved in under 1 minute.

Smeg kettles typically take around 4-5 minutes to boil a full 1.7-litre kettle, thanks to our powerful 3000W heating element and rapid boil technology.

How long is the warranty on Smeg kettles?

Smeg kettles come with a standard 2-year warranty, covering any manufacturing defects or issues under normal use.

How to safely dispose of your old kettle?

To safely dispose of your old kettle, you can either take it to a local recycling centre or some local councils now collect them as part of your local waste collection service. Many retailers will also now accept(whether you purchased a replacement from them or not) old electrical appliances as part of the Electrical Retailer Take-Back scheme.
