Frequently asked questions

What is a coffee grinder?

A coffee grinder (also called a “mill”) is a device used to crush coffee beans into ground coffee, suitable for brewing. Grinders tend to either be manual or automatic / electric, and either utilise a blade or a burr to chop or grind the beans to the required size. Grind size can be adjusted to suit various brewing methods, from espresso to French press, ensuring optimal extraction and flavour. You can also purchase specialty grinders including turkish or espresso grinders.

What is a burr?

A burr grinder contains two or more abrasive surfaces (burrs) which rub together to crush beans to a consistent size. Burr’s can either be flat or canonical. At Smeg, we use conical burr’s for our grinders as they are easier to clean, quieter, and produce less heat which helps to preserve the coffee’s delicious aroma.

Are coffee grinders worth it?

Absolutely. Investing in a coffee grinder allows you to grind beans just before brewing, preserving the beans' natural flavours and aromas. Freshly ground coffee tastes significantly better than pre-ground coffee, making a coffee grinder a worthwhile addition to any coffee lover's kitchen.

What are the benefits of electric coffee bean grinders?

Electric grinders have a number of advantages over manual grinders including:

  • Consistency: Electric grinders provide a uniform grind size, essential for consistent brewing.
  • Convenience: With a push of a button, you get freshly ground coffee in seconds.
  • Adjustability: Easily switch between different grind sizes to match your preferred brewing method.
  • Efficiency: Faster and more powerful than manual grinders, saving you time and effort.
What features to look for in a coffee grinder?

When choosing an electric coffee grinder, consider:

  • Burr Type: Look for conical or flat burrs for consistent grinding. Smeg grinders use a conical burr for the reasons listed above.
  • Grind settings: Multiple settings allow for versatility in brewing methods. Our grinders currently include 30 different grind levels providing you with total control to create the perfect coffee.
  • Capacity: Ensure the grinder can handle the amount of coffee you consume. Our multi-function grinder has a hopper capacity of 350g (enough for approx 21 cups), and our semi-pro model has a capacity of 250g (enough for approx 15 cups).
  • Ease of cleaning: Removable parts and accessible burrs make maintenance straightforward.
How do you use a coffee bean grinder?

Using Smeg’s coffee bean grinders is straightforward:

  • Fill the Bean Hopper: Add your desired amount of coffee beans into the hopper.
  • Select Grind Size: Adjust the grind size according to your brewing method using the settings dial.
  • Grind: Press the start button. The grinder will automatically grind the beans to your specified size.
