Frequently asked questions

What is a retro fridge?

A retro fridge is a refrigerator that has the iconic 50s/ 60s style but with all the modern technology, features, and energy efficiency of the most modern fridges. Retro fridges are becoming more commonly produced and sold, with competitors emulating our iconic Smeg design.

When you think of 50s-style kitchens, you think of the rounded edges, chrome accents, and bold colours that embody the Smeg kitchen range.

Are retro fridge freezers less economical to run?

No. Despite their retro design, our 50s-style fridge freezers use modern technology, meaning they’re just as energy-efficient as modern fridges.

Does a retro fridge freezer only suit a 50s-themed kitchen?

No, a retro fridge freezer doesn’t only suit a 50s theme kitchen! Our iconic designs work as an eye-drawing statement piece and add a timeless sense of elegance to any modern kitchen.

What modern features do the Smeg retro fridge freezers have?

Despite their iconic and 50s-style design, the Smeg retro fridge freezers are full of modern technology and innovative designs.

  • Chrome detailing - With beautiful chrome detailing applied to inner doors, shelves and drawers, the fridge looks slick inside as well as out.
  • Zero energy loss - The Multiflow air circulation system optimises cold air distribution to ensure even temperature, creating the perfect storage conditions for food and drink.
  • Unbeatable practicality - Non-freeze technology prevents the formation of ice accumulation.
  • Bright LED lighting - Bright LED strips on both sides of the fridge provide optimal illumination and total visibility of the interior, whilst being more efficient and longer lasting than traditional bulbs.
  • Details that make a difference - The door hinge is compact, for a lean, elegant overall look.
  • A design to remember - Our retro fridge freezers are also available in an array of unique special editions including a patriotic Union Jack design, a blackboard fridge you can chalk on to as well even special editions from Disney & Dolce & Gabbana.

What colours and finishes are the 50s retro fridge freezers available in?

Our retro fridge freezers come in over 20 designs, colours, and finishes, from our iconic cream finish, to our new azurro blue matte finish, and even designer collaborations with Dolce & Gabbana.

How long does it take for a retro fridge freezer to get cold?

Despite their retro design, a retro fridge freezer works just as efficiently as a modern-looking fridge freezer, meaning it will generally take between 6 and 24 hours to get cold, depending on where you live and the ambient temperature.

If you’ve bought a new fridge freezer, we advise leaving it 24 hours from when you first turn it on to reach the correct temperature before you start loading it with any food.

How do I find out the capacity or ratio of my existing fridge freezer?

You can find out the capacity of your existing fridge freezer (typically measured in litres) by measuring the interior height, width, and depth in centimetres, and then multiplying them together. This will provide you with the capacity in terms of cubic centimetres. Then simply divide by 1,000 to determine the volume in litres.
