Frequently asked questions

What is an electric range cooker?

An electric range cooker is a freestanding cooker that usually comes with two or more ovens (often side-by-side), topped with, either an electric or induction hob. The ovens in modern range cookers are generally electric fan ovens.

These differ from freestanding electric ovens which are generally 60cm in width, and have just a single oven, or a single oven and grill.

What is the difference between a range cooker and an Aga?

Rayburn and Aga are both brand names which are often synonymous with cast iron stoves which often resemble range cookers. However, unlike range cookers, Rayburns and Aga’s traditionally could be used to provide heating to a house in addition to providing heat for cooking. They were ultimately a boiler which was “always on”.

Some modern range cookers are very similar in appearance to traditional cast iron Rayburn or Aga stoves, but as the former use electricity, they are much simpler, faster and more economical to use.

Electric cookers have electric hobs or induction hobs (which are the safest stovetops available), that provide an even temperature displacement to your cookware. In contrast, Rayburns or Agas typically have a hotplate which cooks using thermal heat transfer.

Electric range cookers are much more economical to run, and provide you with the ability to turn heat on or off in an instant.

How to move an electric range cooker

Electric Range Cookers are extremely heavy and can be difficult to move on your own, typically requiring at least two people as well as a dolly or wheel system.

We would recommend having your retailer move your electric range cooker for you. Here at Smeg we offer installation services for your new electric range cooker and removal of any old range cooker or oven. Simply select the installation service when you purchase, and we will take care of it for you.

Which is the best electric range cooker?

Identifying the best electric range cooker for you depends on your needs. For example, the size of your kitchen may determine the maximum width you can opt for and therefore our 60cm-wide electric range cooker may be the best choice for you.

Similarly, if you like to host dinner parties, have a large household, or like to bake regularly, then you may choose a larger oven, like our double oven cavity range cookers. Or you can choose to go even larger, with our four-compartment electric range cookers, that come with 2 oven cavities, a grill and a pan draw!

How to disconnect or connect an electric range cooker

While you don’t strictly need an electrician to install your oven for you, it is strongly advised.

Here at Smeg, we can take care of the whole process of disconnecting your old appliance and connecting the electricity to your new range cooker. Just select these services when placing your order. This saves you the headache of finding a removal service and minimises the time spent without an oven in your kitchen.
