Frequently asked questions

What is a chimney cooker hood?

A chimney cooker hood is a kitchen extractor fan that removes cooking odours and moisture from the air in your kitchen. These are the most common types of cooker hoods and are typically wall mounted and installed above the stove or hobs, for the greatest efficiency.

What is the difference between a chimney hood and a cooker hood?

A chimney cooker hood is a specific sub-type of cooker hood and is named in reference to its design, which looks like a chimney on your wall. This is the most common type of cooker hood.

How do chimney cooker hoods work?

There are two different types of cooker hood filtration systems that work slightly differently: extraction hoods and recirculation hoods.

  • Extraction chimney hoods draw in air from the kitchen, where grease filters trap grease particles in the air before the air is vented outside.
  • Recirculating chimney hoods draw in the air, before grease filters trap grease particles and carbon filters remove any odours. The clean and odourless air is then circulated back into the kitchen.
Do chimney cooker hoods need to be vented outside?

It depends on your type of chimney hood:

  • An extractor chimney hood will need to vent outside
  • A recirculating cooker hood that cleans the grease and odours out of the air, before recirculating the cleaned air back into the kitchen, does not need a vent.

Extraction hoods are the more common style of chimney cooker hoods.

How do you install a chimney cooker hood?

To install your chimney cooker hood, follow these steps:

  1. Choose the Right Location - Measure and mark the correct height above your hob, ensuring adequate clearance as per the manufacturer’s guidelines.
  2. Attach the Wall Brackets - Secure the mounting brackets to the wall, ensuring they are level and properly anchored.
  3. Connect the Ductwork (If Required) - If your hood is ducted, install the ventilation pipe leading to an external wall.
  4. Position the Chimney Hood - Carefully lift the hood onto the brackets, making sure it is aligned correctly.
  5. Secure the Hood - Fix the cooker hood in place using screws provided by the manufacturer.
  6. Install the Chimney Cover - Extend and secure the decorative chimney section to conceal the ducting and wiring.
  7. Connect the Electrical Wiring - Ensure safe and correct wiring according to local electrical regulations.
  8. Test the Cooker Hood - Turn on the extractor fan and lights to check everything is working properly.

We strongly advise having a professional install your chimney cooker hood to ensure proper function, secure mounting, and safety compliance, preventing any risks of injury or damage.
