Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a blender and a food processor?

Food processors typically have S-shaped, flat blades which chop, puree, slice, dice, shred or potentially even spiralise food. In contrast, blenders typically have blades which are angled with part of the blade in a more upwardly facing orientation. This helps to create a whirling motion which encourages food to rise and fall within the jug, reducing the likelihood of food sitting underneath the chopping blades. Blenders often have more blades or “prongs” - typically ranging from 3-5.

Food processors are best for tasks where you need to retain more shape and texture of the produce, whereas blenders are better for smoothies, or smooth soups

What is a personal blender used for?

While many use personal blenders solely for making smoothies, a blender can be used for a wide variety of kitchen tasks. Such as:

  • Drinks: Smoothies, milkshakes, protein shakes, and light juices
  • Sauces and dips: Great for small batches of salsa, vinaigrettes, creamy dips, and marinara sauce (using pre-cooked ingredients).
  • Other foods: Ideal for blending soft or cooked fruits and vegetables for baby food or purées.
How do you use a personal blender?

Personal blenders like the Smeg PBF01 are designed to be simple and convenient, especially for quick, single-serve drinks. Here’s a general guide to using one:

  1. Prepare your ingredients; peel fruits and vegetables where necessary, remove any pits or hard stems, and chop into smaller pieces for easier blending.
  2. Place the ingredients directly into the bottle, ready to blend.
  3. Add a little liquid (water, milk etc.) to help with the blending process.
  4. Screw the blade assembly securely onto the top of the bottle.
  5. Once it’s in place, press down gently to blend. For a faster blend, press down more firmly to activate the higher speed.
  6. Once your drink is ready, simply remove the bottle and attach your lid, and you’re ready to take it with you.
  7. Don’t forget to clean the jug or bottle after use, as well as clean any spills or drops to ensure the continuing smooth operation of your blender.

We have provided general instructions on how to use a personal blender, but given that a blender uses blades operating at high speed, it’s always worth consulting the instruction manual that came with your personal blender before use.

How do you make juice with a personal blender?

Making juice or smoothies with a personal blender couldn’t be simpler.

  1. Prepare your fruit and vegetables: Remove seeds, skins, and tough stems, and chop the produce into manageable-sized pieces.
  2. Add the ingredients to your blender, with liquids like water, to aid in the blending process.
  3. Secure the blade assembly, lock the bottle into place on the motor base, and press down to blend.
  4. The PBF01 features two speed settings for control over texture; just press down more firmly for a faster blend.
  5. Once smooth, twist off the blade and replace it with the travel lid.
Are there different types of blenders?

Yes. The main features that differentiate blenders from one another are the purpose, size, motor speed, control, and design. Let’s have a look at the different kinds of blenders available, so you can choose the one that’s right for you.

  • Personal blenders are typically single-function blenders that perfectly combine ingredients into smoothies or milkshakes, straight into the bottle! Convenient blending for making a smoothie on the go.
  • Jug blenders are more powerful blenders with a larger capacity capability. They also offer additional functionality such as crushing ice and an auto-cleaning feature. With the Smeg Jug Blender, you can also purchase a Smeg ‘Bottle To Go’,
  • High-performance blenders are the most powerful form of blender and make light work of making anything from smoothies to crushing ice. While less powerful blenders may struggle with denser textures and thicker liquids, a high-performance blender can blend a variety of ingredients such as nut butters, flours, vegetables and fruit. High-performance blenders are easy to recognise, with pitchers made of strong and durable plastic instead of glass. This is due to the high amounts of pressure that the high-performance blenders put out.
  • Hand blenders are most typically used for blending sauces or liquids for cooking. As they are portable and manoeuvrable, they offer great versatility for cooking, baking, or smoothie making, giving you more control over the blending process. They may not be as strong as a jug blender or high-performance blender due to their smaller size, which typically houses a smaller motor.
How long is the warranty on a Smeg Personal Blender?

All of our Smeg blenders come with our standard 2-year warranty. This covers any manufacturing defects or issues you may encounter under normal use.
