An island cooker hood is a type of extractor hood designed specifically for kitchens with a central island hob. Unlike traditional wall-mounted hoods, island cooker hoods are suspended from the ceiling above the cooking area, providing powerful ventilation while making a stylish statement.

The key advantages of an island cooker hood over a traditional chimney cooker hood are the 360-degree fan extraction that effectively removes cooking fumes from all sides, and the additional illumination it adds to the cooking area and the whole kitchen.

Is an island cooker hood better than a chimney cooker hood?

Which cooker hood is best for you depends on the position of your hob or stove, as the most effective placement for a cooker hood is directly above the stovetop.

If your stovetop is on an island in the centre of your kitchen, then an island cooker hood would be the best choice due to the 360-degree fan extraction it offers.

However, if your stovetop is against a wall in your kitchen, then a chimney cooker hood would likely be your best option for space-saving, and for efficiency reasons.

What size island cooker hood should I choose?

The size of the island cooker hood that is best for you, depends on a few factors.

If you have a large stovetop then you may want to opt for a larger 120cm island cooker hood which will be more effective in extracting odours and cooking smells.

Conversely, if you have a smaller cooker or are limited for space, then you may prefer to opt for a 90cm island hood.

You would normally opt for a hood which is of a similar width to the hob beneath it.

Installing an island cooker hood requires careful planning and secure ceiling mounting since it hangs from the ceiling rather than the wall. This means it must be properly supported for safety and effective operation, as well as ducting in place in your ceiling.
