Cooker Hoods

A cooker hood, also known as a kitchen extractor fan, is a ventilator installed above a hob or stove that removes airborne grease, steam, smoke, and cooking odours. It helps maintain air quality in the kitchen by either extracting or recirculating air.

The cooker hood that is best for you, depends on your kitchen size and layout, and how much cooking you do.

If you’re an avid home chef who does a lot of cooking, then a powerful chimney or island cooker hood might be right for you. But if you prefer a more modern and subtle look to your kitchen, then an integrated hood or downdraft extractor would offer the functionality you’re looking for, without the large cooker hood dominating your kitchen.

• Best for compact spaces: Visor or Box Cooker Hoods.

There are two different types of cooker hood filtration systems that work slightly differently - extraction hoods and recirculation hoods.

• Extraction cooker hoods draw in air from the hob, and the grease filters trap grease particles in the air before the air is vented outside.
• Recirculating cooker hoods draw in the air, before grease filters trap grease particles and carbon filters remove any odours. The clean air is then circulated back into the kitchen.

Your cooker hood may need to vent outside, depending on the type of cooker hood you have or choose to buy.

• Extraction cooker hoods, also known as ducted cooker hoods, do need to be vented outside.
• Recirculating cooker hoods clean grease and odours out of the air and don’t need to vent outside.

Washing your cooker hood filters is essential to preventing the buildup of grease in your cooker hood, and ensuring your extractor fan works effectively. There are two types of cooker hood filters; metal grease filters and carbon filters.

How to clean metal grease filters

• Remove the filters, by either releasing the clips that secure the metal filter or sliding it out.
• Soak the filters in hot soapy water, with dishwashing soap or a degreaser. While we don’t advise using boiling water to avoid burning yourself, to remove grease the water does need to be hot.
• Leave to soak for 15 - 30 minutes, to help loosen the grease and allow the water to cool before you touch it.
• Scrub the filters with a sponge, cloth, or brush, to remove as much grease as possible. You may struggle to get your filter absolutely spotless, so removing the majority of the grease will still be an improvement.
• Rinse the filters thoroughly with warm water, before leaving to dry completely before reinstalling.

How to clean carbon filters

In short, you can’t clean carbon filters. If you have a recirculating cooker hood, you will instead need to replace your carbon filter every 3 - 6 months, depending on how much you use it.

No, it is generally not recommended to wash and reuse carbon filters for your cooker hood. Washing a carbon filter doesn’t fully reactive it, and it won’t be as effective at removing odours. You should aim to replace your carbon filter every 3 - 6 months.
