How do chimney cooker hoods work?

There are two different types of cooker hood filtration systems that work slightly differently: extraction hoods and recirculation hoods.

Extraction chimney hoods draw in air from the kitchen, where grease filters trap grease particles in the air before the air is vented outside.
Recirculating chimney hoods draw in the air, before grease filters trap grease particles and carbon filters remove any odours. The clean and odourless air is then circulated back into the kitchen.

Do chimney cooker hoods need to be vented outside?

It depends on your type of chimney hood:

An extractor chimney hood will need to vent outside
A recirculating cooker hood that cleans the grease and odours out of the air, before recirculating the cleaned air back into the kitchen, does not need a vent.
